Creating A Marketing Agency? Here’s How To Get Started.

Starting a marketing business can be an exciting and rewarding venture. When I first started jackieGLDN studio as a creative content agency, I had no idea what a ride I was in for. I went from trial and error, then finally success! In an attempt to help others learn from my many (but totally worth it) fails… Here are some steps I took to help me get started, and I'm sure it will give you valuable insight, too:

Step 1: Define your niche

Determine the specific area of marketing in which you want to specialize. It could be online campaigns, IRL experiences, social media marketing, content marketing, SEO, email marketing, or any other aspect that interests you and matches your skills. I offer digital and print copywriting, content strategy, brand marketing, web design (yes, I even created this site that you see!), social media content, and I'm also skilled in UX writing. I wear many hats, but I have a passion for what I do.

Step 2: Conduct market research

Analyze the market demand for your chosen niche. Identify your target audience, understand their needs, and evaluate the competition. This research will help you position your business and develop effective marketing strategies.

Step 3: Create a business plan

Outline your business goals, target market, services, pricing structure, marketing strategies, and financial projections in a comprehensive business plan. It will serve as a roadmap and help you stay focused on your objectives. It will also come in hand if you choose to seek outside funding.

Step 4: Establish your legal structure

Decide on the legal structure for your business, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation. Consult with a lawyer or an accountant to understand the legal and tax implications and register your business in your state accordingly.

Step 5: Set up your office and infrastructure

Determine whether you'll work from home, lease office space, or opt for a virtual office. Set up the necessary equipment, including computers, software tools, high-speed internet, and communication systems like a company email and phone number.

Step 6: Build your team

Decide whether you'll start as a solopreneur, hire contractors, freelancers, or employees. If you plan to hire, determine the roles and skills required. Look for talented individuals with experience in marketing, design, content creation, or analytics to complement your expertise.

Step 7: Create a strong brand

Develop a compelling brand identity that reflects your business values and resonates with your target audience. I offer brand marketing services that not only strategically helps you to create a strong brand voice, but also allows your business to uniquely stand out amongst a sea of obviously similar businesses. I can also help to design a professional logo, choose a color scheme, create a website, and establish your presence on social media platforms. Yes, I can do it all!

Step 8: Develop your service offerings

Define the services you'll offer to clients. Determine your pricing structure, packages, and any additional value you can provide. It's important to clearly communicate the benefits clients will receive by working with you. Not sure where to start? Ask me about my content strategy package that will help you define your services and make them sound appealing, too!

Step 9: Build a portfolio

Start working on projects to showcase your skills and expertise. Offer your services to friends, family, or local businesses at discounted rates or even for free, in exchange for testimonials and portfolio material. I did it, and I don't regret any project. Each gave me the extra experience I needed to actually launch my business into what it is today.

Step 10: Market your business

Develop a marketing strategy to promote your services. Utilize online channels such as your website, blog (just like this one!), social media, and email marketing. Attend industry events, join professional networks, and engage in content marketing to establish your credibility.

Step 11: Network and collaborate

Connect with other professionals in the marketing industry. Attend conferences, join local business organizations, and participate in online forums. Collaborate with complementary businesses to expand your reach and offer integrated solutions to clients.

Step 12: Provide excellent service

Deliver outstanding results and exceptional customer service to your clients. Happy clients can become valuable references and a source of new business through referrals. A satisfied customer always comes back and will be happy to share your services with others.

Lastly, building a successful marketing business takes time and much dedication. Make sure to stay up-to-date with industry trends, continuously learn and improve your skills, and adapt to changes in the digital marketing landscape. Much luck and success to you all!
